Burlington Post Column: Tax Help for Modest Income Earners

It’s that time of year again!

Are you ready to file your 2016 tax return?

If you are an individual earning a modest income of less than $30,000 or a family earning less than $45,000 a year, you are eligible to participate in the Community Volunteer Income Tax program (CVITP) run by the Government of Canada.

CVITP is a free service led by volunteers to help you prepare your 2016 tax return. If you are a Burlington resident earning a modest income, my office and the Burlington Central Library are here to help you this tax season.

By filing your tax returns, you may qualify to receive important benefits such as the Goods and Services Tax Credit, the Ontario Trillium Tax-Free Rebates, the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) and the Canada Learning Bond (CLB).

Last year, dedicated volunteers operating out of my office assisted more than 450 Burlington individuals, newcomers, seniors, and families to file their tax returns. As one of our volunteers said, “Last year my wife and I participated in the Community Income Tax program. It was then we understood how many people needed tax preparation assistance as they have no other means to get their income tax prepared. Being a part of MP Gould’s clinic, we not only gave back to our community but showed Burlington is a caring community.”

Eligible residents can visit my office between Feb. 28 and April 13 to participate in this year’s tax preparation clinic. We are at Burlington Mall, Suite 209. You can drop off your 2016 tax documents during our tax clinic hours — Tuesday from 1-4 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

The Burlington Central Library, 2331 New St., tax preparation clinic is open between Feb. 27 and May 1. During this time you can drop-in every Monday from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

We are fortunate to live in a prosperous country like Canada. The taxes we pay keeps our streets safe and our parks clean, provides us with public education and healthcare, ensures our food and water are healthy and supports our national defence, among many other services we enjoy as Canadian citizens and residents. Schedule some time to prepare and file your 2016 tax return by April 30, 2017.
