“When we think of August it’s often warm days, barbecues and spending time with friends and family. August in our community is also a time for us to celebrate our heritage and our diversity.
The month begins with Emancipation Day. An occasion that marks the freedom from slavery of African descendants in British North America. I was honoured to participate in raising the Pan-African flag at city hall to kick off the Emancipation Day Festival organized by the Halton Black History Awareness Society at Spencer Smith Park. Burlington played an important role both in leading to the end of slavery in the British colonies, but also later on as part of the Underground Railroad.”
