It is hard to believe that we are already at the end of August! What a special summer we’ve had. I’ve been delighted to run into many of you out in the community or for you to pop by the office. A special thanks to all those who came by our booth at Children’s Festival this year (pictured above) or who said Hi over the Civic weekend at Halton Freedom Celebration Festival, the Joseph Brant Day, and the One Burlington Festival.
This past month, I’ve had the honour to welcome several Cabinet colleagues to Burlington, including Catherine McKenna, Mary Ng, Patty Hajdu, Maryam Monsef, and Parliamentary Secretary Adam Vaughan. I was thrilled to engage them on important issues in our community such as environmental restoration, women’s entrepreneurship, advanced manufacturing, our national skills strategy, ending violence against women, and our local anti-poverty efforts in Burlington. For more details on their visits to Burlington, please read on below.
This past Saturday, I held my final youth council meeting of the year. Every year I am fortunate to engage with 20-30 youth in our community who advise me on issues that matter to them as well as learn about what activities are taking place in our community and how they can advocate and get involved. This year’s council was particularly active. For our final meeting, Michael McDonald, CEO of the Bruce Trail Club took us on a hike through Fisher’s Pond with the BTC’s ecologist Bryan. We all learned a lot about native and invasive species and the BTC’s efforts to preserve our natural environment here in Burlington and across Ontario.
As summer is winding up, I want to wish you a lovely Labour Day weekend. It’s going to be an exciting few weeks ahead and I’ll look forward to seeing you around the community. Thank you for the privilege of serving you here in Burlington and for including me in your local events and initiatives.
