Canada and United States reach deal to lift Steel and Aluminum Tariffs

Canada and United States reach deal to lift Steel and Aluminum Tariffs

Dear Friends,

I am happy to share that today, I joined Prime Minister Trudeau at Stelco to announce the decision by the United States to remove tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium. This decision is terrific news for Canadian steel and aluminum workers, their families, and many communities across the country.

Our government’s determination to protect Canadian jobs and our country’s steel industry has paid off. We stood firm and would not back down until we achieved today’s outcome. As a result of today’s announcement, our government will lift the retaliatory tariffs.

This announcement is great news for our country. Within the next two days, Canada and the United States have agreed to eliminate the Section 232 tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum products from Canada and retaliatory tariffs will be lifted. Additionally, all pending litigation at the World Trade Organization will be terminated.

On May 31st 2018, the United States announced that tariffs of 25% on imports of Canadian steel and 10% on imports of Canadian aluminum would take effect on June 1st, 2018.

To stand up for Canada’s steel industry and its workers in light of these illegal and unjustified U.S. tariffs, our government took strong action, including challenging the tariffs at the World Trade Organization and imposing reciprocal, dollar-for-dollar countermeasures against imports from the United States of steel, aluminum, and other products.

Moving forward, Canada and the United States will implement effective measures to prevent the importation of steel and aluminum that is unfairly subsidized and/or sold at dumped prices; and prevent the transshipment of steel and aluminum made outside of Canada or the United States to the other country. Canada and the United States will consult together on these measures as we move forward.

I would like to thank all the Burlington residents and business owners that I have spoken to over the last 12 months for their support and patience as our government has remained steadfast in our commitment to protect the Canadian economy and Canadian jobs.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

Sincerely,

Karina
